University Prep Science & Math Middle School

Thompson Educational Foundation 90/90 Charter School
The new UPSM Middle School at the Detroit Science Center represents a unique partnership between complementary institutions to bring enhanced opportunities for education to this cultural landmark.  Combining a charter school with the facilities of the Detroit Science Center increases the stimulation available for young minds to embrace the world of scientific exploration through growth in the academic environment.  Francis Resendes served as Principal in Charge.

Oriented for maximum desirable daylight, the school contains a new gymnasium and future public café on the lower level.  An atrium lobby serves as the Science Center’s new welcoming  public entrance while preserving the ground-level views to the cultural institutions beyond.

Classroom floors feature learning and lecture spaces combined with studio work areas in a trio layout.  Day lit circulation areas terminate to the north with views to the urban landscape.  Care has been taken to allow the addition to harmonize with the existing Science Center façade while maintaining its individual expression.
