University Preparatory Academy Elementary II

Thompson Educational Foundation 90/90 Charter School
Located in a historic Albert Kahn designed parking structure in the New Center area of Detroit, this two-story concrete frame structure has been renovated for education use.  Francis Resendes served as Principal in Charge for this elementary school on behalf of the Thompson Educational Foundation.

An addition housing the gymnasium, offices, locker rooms and lobby was added to the building, using precast concrete panels for support and enclosure.

The school layout incorporate large, free-flowing open spaces to encourage social interaction between student groups. Each floor, known as a “village”, contains eight classrooms grouped in pairs. The paired classrooms are separated by a movable wall that allows for joint teaching.

Classrooms are grouped around a large “living room” that functions as the meeting and dining space for each “village.” Each floor also features a warming kitchen for nourishment.
